23 AFTV Members and Guests had an early start to arrive in Bendigo for our 3 part excursion- an introductory lecture at the Latrobe Art Institute delivered by Delphine Laboreau-Ormancey, (Tête-à-Tête), On View café's French themed lunch and then of course the exhibition itself. Delphine took us on a journey through the exhibition with accompanying slides to explain the story and development of Paris during La Belle Époque (and a bit beyond) via the 7 themed rooms which enabled and enhanced a smooth and informed visit for all.
Once entering the exhibition we were able to identify each room, starting with the huge map where many of us spent time identifying places we knew well, then progressing through bustling marketplaces, Parisian Gardens, the Seine where both leisure and industrial development were depicted as well as the first bridge, Le Pont des Arts; other rooms were devoted to the Universal Exhibition, the Eiffel Tower, the bohemian life of Montmartre, the Champs Elysées and the Musée Carnavalet, the source of the wealth of material for this exhibition.
Many of the paintings, particularly those of the Impressionist painter, Jean Béraud, whose depiction of the entry to the Universal Exhibition 1889 was chosen for the BAG's publicity poster, displayed so many aspects of the growth of Paris during this period. Other significant artworks such as shop signs and paintings by Maurice Utrillo and Paul Signac as well as prints and posters by Toulouse-Lautrec and his contemporaries reinforced the story. The clothing and accessories also prompted us to stop to learn more of this period.
An enjoyable, enriching and informative experience. Vaut la visite!
