An AFTV / Forum de la Francophonie Initiative

Overview

This competition will engage students from Years 5/6 and Years 7/8 in exploring the rich culinary traditions of Francophone countries. The competition will help students develop their language skills while learning about the cultural significance of traditional dishes. It will involve research, creativity, and a practical application of their French knowledge.

Teachers can use this competition as an assessment task, integrate it into their unit of work, or present it as a standalone challenge within their group or as part of their curriculum.

This competition will not only enhance students' French language skills but also deepen their appreciation for the diverse cultures within the Francophone world.

Objectives

  • To provide learning opportunities for students to deepen their knowledge of the diversity of the Francophonie world by exploring a French speaking country.
  • To provide an opportunity to engage with the gastronomy of various French speaking country.
  • To provide an opportunity for students to speak French through a meaningful and authentic experience.
  • To encourage and promote the learning of French as an essential part of the school curriculum.

Timeline

Closing date for entries: Friday 4 April 2025

Deadline to submit videos: Friday 20 June 2025 (No late entries will be accepted)

Competition Categories

Please enter your students in one of the following 4 categories:

  •    Year 5 and/or 6 
  •     Year 5 and/or 6 (Bilingual Schools)
  •     Year 7 and/or 8
  •     Year 7 and/or 8 (Bilingual Schools)

Task description - steps

  1. Students will research the French-speaking country assigned to them to provide information about it in the video.
  2. They will then research a traditional dish from that country.
  3. Finally, they will produce a video to present the country and the dish.

 French language

Students are encouraged to use as much French as possible, employing sentence structures appropriate for their current level of language acquisition. While they can seek support from teachers and peers, they should avoid using online translation tools. 

Competition Rules

  1. This is a free competition open to students enrolled in Victorian schools in Year 5 to Year 8.
  2. The video produced should be at least 2 minutes long (maximum of 3 minutes) and must be an original piece of work by the student/group of students. A maximum of 4 students per group.
  3. A total of 2 videos per competition category can be entered per school. (Student names should not be mentioned in the videos)
  4. Videos must be chosen and submitted by the classroom teacher in charge of the participating school.
  5. Once each entry is lodged, it cannot be altered. Incomplete or late entries will not be considered.
  6. The AFTV reserves the rights to close entries at any time.
  7. The panel’s decision will be final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
  8. By participating in the competition all competitors give their consent for the submitted videos including the name of the school to be posted on AFTV and Forum de la Francophonie and French Embassy social media platforms and associated websites during Bastille Day Festival in July. Please note: Students names will remain anonymous.

Prizes

  • There will be up to 3 winning videos per category. Winners and prizes will be announced by AFTV and Forum de la Francophonie on Friday 4 July.
  • Prizes will be donated by AFTV. Date of the Prize giving ceremony will be communicated to schools in due course.

Entry process

Register your school by sending an email to lagastronomie2025@gmail.com  with the following details by Thursday 4th April:

  • School name
  • Teacher in charge's name
  • Contact details (Phone number and email)
  • Competition categories for each video (please indicate if your school is bilingual)

Once your registration is received, you will be sent an email of confirmation with your allocated country and a link will be emailed to the teacher in charge to upload the videos by the closing date (Friday 20 June).

Example

Here is an example of a video that explores the recipe for crêpes. Note that while the example introduces the country, it fails to provide any further information about it. Although the sugar never made it into the batter, the judges would not discard the video.
